The 14th edition of the “Giacomo Ciamician” Summer School on Energy will be the first to be dedicated to Maurizio Fermeglia, who was one of its founders and leading promoters, having played an active role in the school since its very first edition.
Over the years, Maurizio Fermeglia has not only been an authoritative figure amongst the Summer School’s lecturers, but also one of the most influential figures in shaping its cultural and scientific identity, making a decisive contribution to its growth, prestige and the definition of its interdisciplinary spirit.
Maurizio Fermeglia, Full Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Trieste, dedicated his research to the sustainable development of energy-related technologies, with the aim of promoting a form of social and industrial development that moved away from the old paradigm characterised by the irresponsible exploitation of natural resources. Over the years, he has helped to educate the School’s participants on interdisciplinary topics such as energy production from fossil and renewable sources, the effects of climate change on biodiversity, and the evolution of society in relation to future challenges. The multidisciplinary nature of the topics he has addressed fully reflects the spirit of the School, which welcomes international participants from both scientific and humanities backgrounds.
The decision to dedicate the Summer School on Energy “Giacomo Ciamician” to him stemmed from a desire to keep his memory alive even after his premature passing in 2024. This dedication serves as a tribute to the value of his scientific and personal commitment, which continues to guide the school and the community surrounding it to this day.
“Tra rocce e stelle. I sentieri di Maurizio Fermeglia” (Among rocks and stars. The trails of Maurizio Fermeglia) is the event through which the UniTS community has commemorated Maurizio Fermeglia. The multifaceted figure of the Rector Emeritus is brought to life through the stories of friends, students, staff and colleagues, who will describe the paths charted by Maurizio Fermeglia. Teaching, science, a passion for nature and the mountains, and his beloved Pink Floyd will be some of the themes explored during the event to retrace Maurizio Fermeglia’s journey and outline his human, cultural and scientific legacy, which must be preserved and passed on.
